Clavius is located in the southern highlands, the most notable feature being the Clavius and Maginus craters. Being located in the southern highlands, the terrain is rough, but the lunar dust is lighter which offers greater contrast.

This region is named after the German Jesuit mathematician and astronomer Christopher Clavius, (1600 AD), who created the Gregorian calendar widely used today.
